When Love Means Keeping Watch: Honoring Family Caregivers

It was 2 a.m. when Margaret woke to the sound of the front door creaking open. Her husband John, who lives with Alzheimer’s, was quietly putting on his shoes. “I have to get to work,” he said, though he retired years ago.

Margaret gently took his hand. “You’re safe, John. It’s still nighttime.” She led him back to bed, knowing she’d lie awake, listening, just in case.

This November — National Family Caregivers Month — we honor the countless families like Margaret and John who walk this path of love and endurance every day. Caring for a loved one with dementia brings moments of deep connection, and deep exhaustion. Anxiety, wandering, and sleepless nights are part of the reality, and even the most devoted caregivers need care themselves.

The good news: you don’t have to do it alone.

NYC offers exceptional nonprofit resources such as CaringKind, NYU Langone’s Dementia Family Support Program, the New York Memory Center, the Alzheimer’s Association NYC Chapter, and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America — all providing education, respite, and emotional support.

At Holistic HomeCare Associates, we understand the toll caregiving can take. Our team of compassionate nurses and caregivers specialize in dementia and Alzheimer’s care — bringing calm, skilled support into the home so families can rest, recharge, and reconnect with the ones they love. Whether you need a few hours of respite or ongoing help, we’re here to make caregiving lighter and life a little brighter.

💜 Because caring for yourself is part of caring for your loved one.
