As a nurse practitioner, I believe in arming our clients with knowledge so they can make informed choices and optimize their health—especially during cold and flu season. Respiratory viruses like flu, COVID-19, and RSV are all circulating, and while symptoms can overlap, there are clues to help you tell them apart—and simple steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Spotting the differences:
- Flu: Often comes on suddenly with fever, body aches, fatigue, and cough. Sneezing is less common.
- COVID-19: Can vary widely, but common signs include fever, dry cough, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, and shortness of breath.
- RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): More common in young children and older adults. Symptoms resemble a cold—runny nose, mild cough, sometimes wheezing—but can become severe in vulnerable adults.
Prevention tips:
- Vaccines: Stay up to date on flu and COVID vaccines; high-risk adults may be eligible for RSV vaccines or monoclonal antibody protection.
- Hand hygiene: Wash hands frequently and avoid touching your face.
- Masking: In crowded indoor settings, masks reduce exposure to airborne viruses.
- Stay home if sick: Prevent spreading illness to family, friends, and colleagues.
By understanding the signs and taking proactive steps, you can protect yourself and your community from serious illness this season.
