Winter Safety Tips: Preventing Falls in Older Adults
January 26, 2026 | Family Caregiver Support

Winter weather is in full swing right now and so is the risk of outdoor falls, especially for older adults. Here are a few tips to stay safe out there!
- Wear Proper Footwear: Choose low-heeled boots or shoes with non-slip, rubber soles and good traction.
- Clear Pathways: Regularly shovel and salt or sand outdoor areas.
- Ask for Help: Don’t shovel snow yourself; have someone else do it, or arrange for deliveries.
- Use Handrails: Always hold onto railings when navigating steps and keep hands free for balance
- Walk Wisely: Give yourself extra time. Take small steps, leaning forward slightly with loose knees and arms out for balance, and be cautious of ice; try to stick to cleared areas.
- Winterize Devices: Attach ice-grip tips with spikes to canes or walkers for stability.
- Stay Active: Indoor exercises (yoga, tai chi, strength training) improve balance.
- Carry a Phone: Keep your cell phone on you in case of emergency
