When Care Starts with a Conversation
June 23, 2026 | Family Caregiver Support

Recently, we had a new client who reluctantly started receiving home care for the first time. Her daughters were more than a little nervous. Their mom sat quietly in her favorite chair while their new caregiver, Kate, tried her best to make conversation.
“So, tell me about yourself,” Kate asked.
The response? A polite shrug.
Then, Kate suggested that the family share an old photo album.
Within minutes, mom was pointing to a picture of herself in a beehive hairdo from the 1960s. “Don’t ask how much hairspray that took,” she laughed. Soon she was sharing stories about raising her children, family vacations, and the dog who somehow managed to eat an entire Thanksgiving turkey.
Just like that, the ice was broken.
Starting care can feel a little like a first date, with everyone trying to figure each other out. Families know their loved one’s stories, quirks, passions, and sense of humor, but new caregivers don’t have that advantage.
That’s where reminiscence can work wonders.
One of our favorite suggestions at Holistic HomeCare Associates is creating a simple life story scrapbook filled with photos and memories from childhood, family life, careers, hobbies, vacations, pets, and special milestones. It doesn’t have to be Pinterest-worthy. A binder, photo album, or even a collection of printed pages can do the trick.
For caregivers, these stories become instant conversation starters. For older adults, they provide an opportunity to talk about the people, places, and experiences that shaped their lives. And for families, it’s a wonderful reminder that there is so much more to their loved one than a diagnosis or care needs.
The truth is, the best care relationships are built on connection. Because when someone knows your story, they don’t just care for you, they care about you!
