Loneliness Has a Season Too

I’m fine. Really, I am. But fall has a funny way of making my world a little smaller.

The days get shorter. It gets dark before dinner. I’m less inclined to go for a walk, and driving at night isn’t quite as appealing as it used to be. Before I know it, I’ve spent an entire day at home and had more conversations with the television than with an actual person. And no, yelling at the evening news does not count as socialization.

For many of us as we get older, loneliness doesn’t arrive with a big announcement. It sneaks in as routines change. We stop going out quite as much, see friends less often, or decide something is “too much trouble.”

That doesn’t mean we need someone hovering over us. Sometimes we just need a little more connection. A regular lunch with a friend. A family call that isn’t rushed. Someone to take a walk or run errands with. A companion who comes by a few times a week, or even just something on the calendar worth getting dressed for.

So as the days get shorter, don’t just ask the older loved one in your life, “Are you okay?” You already know what we’re going to say. Ask instead: “What are you looking forward to this week?”

The answer may tell you a whole lot more.

At Holistic HomeCare Associates, companion care can provide just that little bit of extra connection. Sometimes, the best kind of care isn’t really about “care” at all. It’s about having something to look forward to or someone to share the day with.
