A Milestone Worth Celebrating: 12 Lessons from 12 Years

When we started Holistic HomeCare Associates 12 years ago, Rick and I thought we had a pretty good sense of what families needed. I had worn many hats over the years—nurse practitioner, care manager, educator, advocate, and daughter. Rick, meanwhile, was practically raised in the world of aging services. His mother was a nurse care manager and one of the founding members of the Aging Life Care Association. Together, we brought a great deal of experience to the table.

What we didn’t fully appreciate was how much our clients and families would teach us.

Twelve years later, we’ve supported thousands of older adults, family caregivers, and care professionals. Along the way, we’ve learned some lessons that no textbook, conference, or certification could have taught us.

Here are twelve of my favorites.

1. Aging Is Personal

No two people age the same way. One 90-year-old may be planning a trip to Italy while another struggles to walk to the mailbox. The best care starts by understanding the person, not just the diagnosis.

2. Families Are Doing the Best They Can

Most family caregivers are juggling careers, children, spouses, pets, and their own health concerns while trying to care for someone they love. Sometimes they need guidance. Sometimes they need resources. Often they just need someone to tell them they’re doing okay.

3. The Refrigerator Tells a Story

As care managers, we’ve learned that a quick peek inside the refrigerator can reveal a lot. Is there food? Is it fresh? Has anyone been eating? The refrigerator rarely lies.

4. Independence Doesn’t Mean Doing Everything Alone

Many older adults fear accepting help because they equate it with losing independence. Ironically, the right support often allows people to remain independent much longer.

5. Falls Change Everything

One fall can alter the course of a person’s life. Prevention isn’t exciting, but it’s one of the most important conversations we have every day.

6. Humor Is Powerful Medicine

We’ve laughed with clients through some very difficult circumstances. A good sense of humor doesn’t solve every problem, but it can make hard days a little easier.

7. Caregivers Need Care Too

This lesson deserves repeating. Then repeating again. Family caregivers often place themselves at the bottom of the priority list. Burnout is real, and self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.

8. Small Changes Matter

Sometimes the solution isn’t complicated. Better lighting. A grab bar. A medication organizer. A meal delivery service. Small changes can have a surprisingly big impact.

9. Listening Is More Important Than Talking

People want to feel heard. Whether it’s a client sharing a life story or a daughter worried about her mother’s memory, meaningful listening is often the most valuable thing we provide.

10. Planning Ahead Is a Gift

Conversations about future care preferences, legal documents, and healthcare decisions aren’t always easy. But when families have a plan, crises become a little less overwhelming.

11. Kindness Is Never Wasted

We’ve seen remarkable acts of kindness from caregivers, neighbors, home care aides, nurses, and family members. In home care, kindness is often the thread that holds everything together.

12. It Truly Takes a Village

No one person can do it all. Successful aging often involves a team—family, friends, healthcare providers, caregivers, community resources, and advocates working together toward the same goal.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate 12 years of Holistic HomeCare Associates, we are grateful for every client, family, caregiver, and colleague who has allowed us to be part of their journey.

The biggest lesson of all?

Aging is not just about growing older. It’s about continuing to live with purpose, dignity, connection, and joy.

And if we’ve learned anything over these past 12 years, it’s that we’re all in this together.

Thank you for allowing us to walk alongside you.

Here’s to the next chapter.

With gratitude,
